This vacation home in the hills of Appalachia is built deep into the grade and overlooks a vast expanse of forested hills.
The structure is clad in primarily vertical fenestration to mimic the outcroppings of trees, while its two projecting canopies flair toward and against the mountain slope, creating a butterfly section in the main living area.
Upon arrival, at level 2, one passes a long corridor which opens to a 650sf living space, equipped with chef’s kitchen and an off-axis fireplace to preserve the direct views of the mountains.
The fireplace chimney threads all 3 levels, connecting an outdoor patio on the lowest level, while servicing the main living space and upper level play area.
The master suite is tucked deep within the rock of the lowest level, alongside a bunk room and a home office.
Like a wedding cake, the house has three distinct tiers of experiences, ranging from public to private and from open to closed. The common thread for all spaces is that they are outwardly focused, to make specific connections with the natural surroundings: from the sloped earth and undergrowth at the base of trees, to the forested mid-section of slender trunks, to the canopy above with unrivaled views of the majestic hillside.
